When he was living at “Sunnyside”, Earls Barton in Northamptonshire in 1901, 34-year-old WALTER GARNER put down on the census return that he was born at Harrold. However, there is no civil registration record of his birth. I know that the surname Garner is a popular one in North Bedfordshire, and I wonder whether any present day inhabitants of Harrold might have any knowledge of a Garner family ever having lived there? Any help would be gratefully received, as we approach the centenary of his son’s death during the First World War. Having recently qualified as a teacher, Percy Garner was commissioned into the Welsh Regiment, and was killed near Fleurbaix in April 1918. He was only identified through his regimental buttons and dental records in 1928.
